Five takeaways from chaotic weekend of SEC baseball: LSU cruises, Texas makes statement (2025)

Another week of SEC baseball is in the books. Week four of conference play brought a top-five showdown between Texas and Georgia. LSU and Oklahoma met in another meeting of top-10 squads. On the plains, Auburn and Alabama renewed their rivalry in a ranked matchup.

Meanwhile, found life vs. Tennessee while Florida continued to slip. The weekend was full of action with postseason implications.

We have more separation in the standings at the top of the conference. What was once a four-way tie at No. 1 is now a two-way tie between Texas and Auburn. LSU sits alone in third place at 10-2, with Tennessee in fourth place at 9-3. All four schools are in the race for the regular season conference championship. Georgia and Ole Miss sit at 8-4. Both are a good series away from reentering that conversation.

Here are the biggest stories and five takeaways from the weekend's SEC baseball action.

Texas sweeps Georgia in top-5 battle

The biggest series of the weekend was in Austin, Texas, where No. 3 Georgia traveled to No. 5 Texas. After Texas took games one and two, Georgia entered Sunday looking to protect against a sweep.

Georgia was down a run in the top of the seventh. Nolan McCarthy homered to tie it at three. The tie held until extra innings. Then, Texas catcher Rylan Galvan came up to bat. With a 3-1 count, Galvan went oppo, driving the ball over the right-center field wall. Texas walked it off to win 4-3, sweeping the No. 3 Bulldogs.

On the mound, Texas got a quality start from Roger Riojas before Dylan Volantis entered to shut the door with four shutout innings. Volantis struck out eight without issuing a walk.

It was a statement win for the Longhorns. Texas is 11-1 in SEC play and has a series win over LSU and a sweep of Georgia under its belt. It's hard to find a better resume than that right now.

There were questions about how Texas would handle the grind of the SEC schedule, but the Longhorns are passing every test. The sweep over Georgia marked Texas' first sweep over a top-3 team in six years.

Perhaps no man looks better than Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle. After leading Texas A&M to the College World Series final, Schlossnagle departed for Texas. Texas A&M struggled out the gate in 2025 as Texas emerged as a contender.

Texas hired a guy who was a proven winner in the SEC. The Longhorns' success in their inaugural SEC campaign is no accident.

Does Texas A&M have life?

Texas A&M started its SEC slate 0-6. A&M followed that up by dropping a series at Kentucky but got in the win column with a 1-2 series. The schedule didn't look to be getting easier as Texas A&M traveled to face No. 1 Tennessee.

On Friday, it looked like more of the same. Tennessee run-ruled Texas A&M in a 10-0 seven-inning victory.

But on Saturday, Texas found new life. The Aggies took both games of Saturday's doubleheader, including a 17-6 victory to close the series. It was A&M's first SEC series win this year, and just maybe, a sign that Texas A&M isn't dead yet.

A&M's 17-run outburst saw the Aggies tally 16 hits and seven homers. If that wasn't enough, A&M recorded seven walks.

Texas A&M sits at 3-9 in SEC play. Reaching the postseason will be an uphill battle, but it's not over year and A&M now has a road series win over the No. 1 team in America on its resume.

LSU showcases elite pitching in sweep of Oklahoma

LSU pitchers did something they hadn't done since 1992. The Tigers' staff did not allow a single earned run to Oklahoma in a three-game sweep of the Sooners.

Ace Kade Anderson set the tone with a complete game shutout on Thursday night. Anderson struck out 14 while walking just two. Anthony Eyanson kept it going on Saturday, not allowing an earned run in 5.1 innings of work. Eyanson passed it off to Casan Evans, who finished the game with a flawless relief outing.

On Sunday, Chase Shores turned in his best SEC start of the year before reliever Zac Cowan shut the door.

LSU only had to use five pitchers all weekend. The Tigers dropped the series at Texas after the bullpen ran into some problems. You don't have to worry about that when the only relievers you have to use are your top two. Credit to LSU starters for pitching deep into games and putting Jay Johnson in that position.

We knew Anderson and Eyanson were good, but if Shores is finally starting to settle in, LSU will have the pitching advantage on Sunday moving forward.

Vanderbilt sweeps Florida, Gators continue free fall

Texas A&M and Florida were grouped together as disappointments after a few weeks of SEC play. Both were top 10 teams at one point this season. Now, both are unranked. Texas A&M found a bounce, but Florida continued to slip, getting swept by Vanderbilt.

Florida entered the ninth inning on Sunday with a chance to make it a game and prevent a sweep, but the Commodores tallied five runs in the ninth to put Florida away. Vandy's Jonathan Vastine was 4-4, driving in two runs and scoring two runs.

Florida remains with just one conference win. The Gators are watching their postseason hopes evaporate in a year that once looked promising after a solid nonconference slate.

UF has dealt with injuries across the board. The lineup has managed, but Florida's pitching staff ranks 15th in the SEC in ERA. Opponents are hitting .250 off the Gators and the staff has issued 142 walks.

Auburn notches series win over No. 8 Alabama

Auburn added an impressive bullet point to the resume with a series win over No. 8 Alabama. The squads split the first two games of the series, making game three a rubber match.

Auburn spotted four runs in the first inning but Alabama responded with three runs in the top of the second. Auburn had a response of its own, scoring two more in the second. Auburn tacked on another in the sixth.

Bama challenged in the seventh inning, but Auburn held on for the 7-5 win. Auburn has now won three of four series to start conference play. Auburn's eyes are set on hosting a regional with the resume it's building. The Tigers have another chance to prove something when LSU comes to town this weekend.

"The next six weeks are going to be the same way, and we have to love this. We have to embrace it and want to be right in the middle of it," Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said.
