Vocal Choir/Handbell Choir Director

Purpose: To plan and provide appropriate choir and special music for services of worship for Northminster Presbyterian Church, a small community church.

Accountability: Will report directly to the Pastor and may be required to report to Session through the Human Resource Committee or the Worship Committee. Will be required to attend Worship Committee meetings regularly to plan the music program and special events.

Christian Commitment: The Vocal/Handbell Choir Director must exhibit and value Christian principles of love, caring, compassion and be dedicated to fulfilling the mission and ministry of the church.

Responsibilities:

  1. To work with Pastor and the Worship team to fulfill the mission and ministry of the church through vocal and handbell music.
  2. To promote participation in the vocal choir and handbell choir.
  3. To prepare choir selections appropriate for each service of worship from September through May.
  4. To work in partnership with the church organist/accompanist in planning music for regular and special worship services.
  5. To plan special music or soloists when there is no choir scheduled during the summer months or on special occasions.
  6. To direct the handbell choir, schedule rehearsals and schedule periodic Sunday performances.
  7. To provide bulletin information for the choral and handbell music selections (excluding hymns, which will be chosen by the Pastor) for each worship service to the church secretary by the designated deadline.
  8. To work with the Worship Team to purchase new music within the music budget limitations.
  9. Maintain an organized catalog of music owned by the church.
  10. To attend regularly scheduled meetings with the Pastor.
  11. Contact the Pastor, Human Resource Elder and the church office when requesting time off. Notify any others who will be affected by the time off.
  12. Schedule annual maintenance of the handbells. The piano annual maintenance will be scheduled by the Office Administrator.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Evaluation: Performance reviews will be conducted annually by the Human Resource Elder and reviewed by the Pastor. The Human Resource Elder will annually review the adequacy of compensations and make a recommendation to the Finance Committee.

Organist/Accompanist

Purpose: To plan and provide appropriate music on organ and piano for worship services and special services or events for Northminster Presbyterian Church, a small community church.

Accountability: Will report directly to the Pastor and may be required to report to Session through the Human Resource Committee or the Worship Committee. Will be required to attend Worship Committee meetings regularly to plan the music program and special events.

Christian Commitment: The Organist/Accompanist must exhibit and value Christian principles of love, caring, compassion and be dedicated to fulfilling the mission and ministry of the church.

Responsibilities:

  1. To work with Pastor, the Choir Director and the Worship team to fulfill the mission and ministry of the church through keyboard music.
  2. To prepare and play keyboard music appropriate for each service of worship including the prelude offertory, postlude and other keyboard music, as required.
  3. Through the music, lead the congregation in the singing of the hymns.
  4. To accompany the choir and soloists, as needed.
  5. To coordinate instrumentalists for prelude, offertory and postlude.
  6. Provide bulletin information for each worship service to the church office by the designated deadline.
  7. Contact the Pastor, the Human Resource Elder and the church office when requesting time off. Notify any others who will be affected by the time off.
  8. To prepare appropriate keyboard music for funerals, when requested. Payment for services will be provided by the family.
  9. To play for weddings at the church, if available. To meet with the wedding party to plan appropriate music. Additional rehearsals may be required, such as with a soloist. Payment is made directly to the organist by the family.
  10. To attend regularly scheduled meetings with the Pastor.
  11. Other duties as assigned.
